<image:title>Creative Work - The Cormorant, 1</image:title>
<image:caption>Seals at Oyster Lane by Maura Gilligan At the verge of the road beneath the southern face of Knocknarea, Oyster Lane drops steeply seaward, narrow, deeply rutted. Briars arch and embrace before the laneway opens suddenly to the West, where the channel flows, touching the round brown stones of the shore. Beyond that channel, sealbanks sprawl across the bay to Beltra, sandy islands supporting colonies of black, white and beige. Pups sit and wobble and watch. Young seals dive and play. On Charlie’s Rock where his webbed feet cling, the cormorant’s wings are spread above the water. Awaiting the silver gleam, bird and seal anticipate another dive on shining sea-trout, ending the momentum of their movement upstream past the Inishes at Breeogue and onwards to the waterfalls of Ballisodare. Older seals sit stately as the incoming tide rises about them, and their heads gradually disappear. Seeming never to have moved, they re-appear as the water recedes, as if to take a curtain call. The seals make constant stolen sounds - like humans they mutter and moan, like wild geese they honk, like dogs they bark and growl, like wolves they howl. Most eerily of all they wail, conjuring the cry of the banshee in a lament that rises and spreads and soars... The sheer cliffs of the mountain at Culleenamore hold the long notes of their wailing, and in rocky crevices the sleep of ravens is disturbed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Creative Work - From the Feet Up</image:title>
<image:caption>Over a period of six months, Maura Gilligan explored the personal, geographical and historical pathways that led ten residents of Sligo and its environs over a 50-95 year life span to the time they now inhabited. A selection of quotes, stories and conversations makes up the pages of this book and exhibition entitled ‘From the Feet Up’. Black & white portrait photographs by James Fraher accompany each story. Extracts from two of the personal interviews: “… in those days I did not have fifty pairs of shoes on a shelf… those one pair of shoes took me inside and outside, uphill and downhill, in the classroom and outside – and obviously I didn’t have enough sense to walk away with them!!… And those shoes weren’t red, or purple, that I can recall !! I would say they were a jet black, and as flat as I was! and obviously they were pretty worn like myself because I needed them mended, and I needed mending myself but didn’t know it…. ” A.H. “…. the odd thing about it was he was captured, some time later, and in the foray, or furore, he lost his hat, and unfortunately his name and initials were inside his hat…. now, he escaped and he went down to Tiberius – the Sea of Galilee – and we had a taggart down there, so I was detailed to go down and pick him up. I never will forget when I went in he looked at me and he said ‘I think I know you’ he said…I said I know you too, and then I said I’ve come to pick you up, because you’ve got a court case in Jerusalem in two days’ time and I said ‘I’m your escort’ I said, ‘I’ll look after you very well ” B.M.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Extract from ‘1966 Calcutta’ “The lift shimmies to a halt, leaving a narrow dark slit where it doesn’t quite touch the landing. The liftman calls goodnight and clangs the heavy gate shut. The old machine wheezes and grunts and descends slowly. It’s just two paces to the cream double doors of the apartment. The black mouth of the old concrete stairwell mocks. The right half of the door gives in to the turn of the key and a shiver snakes down my damp back. The stairwell is a dark cavern that frightens me. On the ground floor, the liftman’s wooden sandals clack across worn marble, connected to his hardened soles by a single knob that his toes clutch. It amazes us that the liftman’s toes can cling to the single stud between the big toe and second toe, propelling him forward on wooden platforms. His pallet and blanket await him in the wide bare hallway open to the night. The hot Calcutta night hums.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Creative Work - Seeing the Hidden - A collaborative community project</image:title>
<image:caption>For the Bealtaine Festival 2010, Maura worked with Sligo Arts Service on a project which explored the hidden heart of five lesser-known areas in County Sligo through interview and film. The project was also expanded into words in an accompanying booklet. The film shorts feature five areas in Sligo; Killavil, Skreen, Ballinafad, the Gleniff Horseshoe Area and Sligo Harbour. Artists collaborating on the project included Filmmaker Caroline Clancy, Visual Artist Catherine Fanning, Writer & Poet Dermot Healy, Photographer James Fraher and Writer Maura Gilligan. Extract from the booklet ‘Seeing the Hidden’ SKREEN, Co. Sligo: “Rabbits burrow deeply and daffodils still surface among the crumbled stone walls that were once a part of the original rectory of Skreen, where George Gabriel Stokes was born on August 13th 1819. George Stokes became one of the world’s greatest mathematicians and physicists, who remained deeply connected to the land and seascapes of Skreen which played a significant part in the formulation of his theories. Known for Stokes’ law, Stokes’ theorem and several other major works, his published works by no means reflect his services in the advancement of science, which were extraordinary in their breadth and application. In this film we interview well-known physicist and astronomer Paddy Rolleston who lives in Skreen, and former European Commissioner Ray McSharry, who spent a large part of his childhood at his grandmother’s home in Skreen and unveiled a memorial to George Stokes at the Rectory in 1995.”</image:caption>
